Fundraising Manager

Summary of the role

The Fundraising Manager is responsible for developing and driving the TaRL Africa fundraising strategies to secure and manage significant income from a diverse range of donors, international organizations, multi-donor funds, private sector companies and large trusts and foundations to support the organization’s mission.

The Fundraising Manager will be expected to proactively identify and pursue funding opportunities needed to significantly strengthen our ability to realize our organization goals through the establishment of a dedicated fundraising function.

Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) Africa is a high-profile initiative originally developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) and the Indian Education NGO Pratham to promote evidence-informed education programming in Africa. TaRL Africa, now headquartered in Kenya, works to improve basic reading and arithmetic skills of children on the African continent through the TaRL approach.  We aim to reach 3 million children in the next five years. Key countries of operation include Kenya, Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria and Zambia where we work on contextualizing the TaRL approach.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and implement the Fundraising Plan with clear targets to sustainably grow income in line with the 5-year Strategic Plan and Financial Sustainability Plan.
  • Coordinate fundraising activities and proposal writing processes with country and programs teams
  • Lead the team in identifying fundraising priorities and development, implementation and monitoring of annual fundraising operational plans and budgets.
  • Work with the Finance team to ensure that the fundraising pipeline is updated on a monthly basis and risks are flagged.
  • Support the technical team members to prepare high quality and relevant proposals and reports for prospective donors and partners.
  • Develop effective fundraising systems and processes for the organization to ensure that fundraising priorities and targets are set, monitored and met.
  • Lead the development, testing and exploration of innovative fundraising channels.
  • Track progression of fundraising proposals submitted and requirements.
  • Build overall organizational capacity to identify and successfully respond to funding opportunities by providing guidance, training and tools to the organization.
  • Working with programme staff, donors and other stakeholders in the community to identify new opportunities for funding from existing donors; and new potential donors for TaRL programmes.
  • Develop strong donor reports and support donor management.

 

 Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field
  • Proven track record of generating significant income ($3 million plus annually), preferably in the context of an international organization.
  • At least five years’ experience in fundraising in at least one of the areas of: public sector partnerships, major donors, trusts/foundations or corporate fundraising.
  • At least three years’ fundraising experience in an international setting, ideally with an INGO and with experience in Africa
  • Experience developing innovative concepts and proposals.
  • Experience of creating and implementing fundraising strategies Experience and expertise in developing relationships with institutional donors, high net worth individuals or corporations.

 

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Professional and enthusiastic.
  • Excellent writing and oral presentation skills in English
  • Excellent writing and oral presentation skills in French is advantageous
  • Experience in self managing to deliver targets
  • Strong  proposal and report writing skills,
  • Ability to understand the complex funding strategies of donors and match TaRL programmes against these strategies
  • Strong diplomatic skills with sensitivity to political and cultural issues.
  • Proactive networker.
  • Highly collaborative team player High ethical standards of behavior, good judgment, respect for others, confidentiality and
  • Demonstrable numerical and budgetary skills, including preparing fundraising budgets and proficient use of excel and spreadsheets.
